Still one of the best plants for hedges and screens, these trees can be planted out in woods and fields for shelter belts.  Cuprocyparis Leylandii will grow between 18 to 24 inches (46 to 61cms)per year and Castlewellan Gold will grow at a slightly slower rate of 18 inches (46cms)per year. They will both grow in most soil conditions and Cuprocyparis Leylandii will grow in most coastal areas. The roots of these trees are no more of a problem than any other hedge. Once the hedge is established, a years growth on the side could be about 6" (15cms) and the top around 12" (30cms).

Maintenance:
Hedges should be cut from an early stage. The sides should be trimmed to thicken-out the hedge and the tops left to grow. To stop the hedge at the height required, let the hedge grow about 2ft past the required height: e.g. a 6ft hedge should grow to 8 ft and then be cut back.
Hedges only need to be cut once a year (August to September), like any other hedge. If looked after in this way, they are no more of a problem than any other hedge. The ideal hedge is 6ft high and2ft wide
Leylandii has had a lot of bad press, but this is due mainly to individuals not looking after them and not pruning
them annually.
